MATTIE stands for Mattamuskeet Artisans - Teaching, Training, Instructing, and Educating and is a tribute not only to a population whose heritage and talent is rich in art, but also to our world renowned Lake Mattamuskeet, the wintering habitat to more than 100,000 tundra swan, snow geese, and other migratory waterfowl; an abundance of wildlife in the refuge - the tie that binds the culture of mainland Hyde County through its nurturing of vast expanses of rich farmland throughout; the relative seclusion, star filled nights devoid of light pollution ... a perfect habitat for us to bring to fruition an arts community offering local and visiting artists a place to live and learn, a venue where one can grow artistically in their craft, communicate creatively with one another and be inspired by nature.
We are located in the heart of the maritime village of Swan Quarter, about 4 miles (as the swan flies) from the lake, on the shores of the Pamlico Sound, and just about a half mile from the Swan Quarter/Ocracoke Ferry Landing. Elevation is 0 feet. 35.405N Longitude -76.331W
Look for the 3-storied, antebellum building with the large murals - reproductions of original artworks by some of the artists we represent.
